Documentary Explores Sensual Nature of Birth

Audiences around the world are cheering Orgasmic Birth, a documentary film by internationally respected childbirth educator, doula, and birth activist Debra Pascali-Bonaro that asks: What would happen if women were taught to enjoy birth rather than endure it?
Five years in the making, Orgasmic Birth challenges cultural myths by revealing the emotional, spiritual, and physical heights attainable through birth. Viewers witness the passion of birth as women give birth in unhurried, non-medicalized settings—including hospital birth centers—where they feel supported and safe.
The film, recently shown at the prestigious Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, will be featured this fall on ABC-TV’s news magazine “20/20”.
Birthing experts who provide commentary in the film include women’s health advocate and bestselling author Christiane Northrup, MD; Marsden Wagner, MD, MS, former director of Women’s and Children’s Health for the World Health Organization; and other leaders in the field. They explain that a pleasurable birth is an integral part of women’s sexuality and a neglected human right.
Orgasmic Birth had its world premiere on May 16, 2008 at the fifth annual World Respected Childbirth Week conference in Prague, Czech Republic. The United States premiere was held in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 18, followed by screenings in more than a dozen states, with many still to come. The film is being shown across Europe, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Israel, and more.
The DVD, subtitled in French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese, has a remarkable score by John McDowell, who wrote the music for the Oscar-winning documentary Born Into Brothels.  Copies of the DVD and original soundtrack CD are now available through the website, www.orgasmicbirth.com. DVDs and CDs continue to be sold for screening events at universities and for other educational uses, facilitated by the site’s comprehensive Screening Planner.

Pam England – coming to Flagstaff

Pam England is coming to Flagstaff and offering three workshops the weekend of February 6, 7, and 8 as a part of her Arizona tour though Flagstaff, Prescott, Phoenix and Tucson.  Register through her website or call (805) 964-6611.

Pam England is the author of “Birthing From Within”, a mother, former midwife and an artist with an inspiring new vision.

An evening talk will be offered on Friday, February 6th from 6:30 – 8:30 p in historic downtown Flagstaff and the Saturday and Sunday workshops (9:00 a – 6:00 p) are being held over at the North Country Health Care building off of N 4th St.

England’s Saturday one-day workshop (Birth & Life as a Hero’s Journey) quickly cuts through assumptions and old ways of thinking, freeing participants to envision and enact an inspiring new paradigm for life transitions, birth preparation, and finding new meaning in all of their stories. Pam England poetically and passionately tells beloved, ancient hero myths that parallel our own lives and births. She illustrates the heroine’s journey and outlines the timeless tasks we must complete to achieve personal freedom and spiritual growth. (Contact hours available). More information available.

Sunday’s one-day workshop is called “Birth Story Medicine” and will also be held at North Country Health Care.  Women tell their birth stories to be social, to instruct, to brag, and in search of healing.  When pregnancy, birth or postpartum are the source of grief, anger, or confusion, then the parent or professional tells their story in search of “medicine,” healing words, a new insight, forgiveness of themselves or another. This workshop revives the nearly forgotten role of the story-listener who listens in such a way she helps the teller heal her own story.  Learn how to listen deeply to hear the buried “seed” of the trauma. (Contact hours available).  More information available.

The evening talk is $18 in advance and $25 at the door.  The one day workshops are each $150 in advance and $175 at the door.
